Reviews
"With a passion for early and modern repertoire and an ability to seamlessly cross the genres and performance styles of folk and art-music, Evergreen Ensemble is an up-and-coming ensemble with a unique musical language". (MRC)
"Artistic director Shane Lestideau provided a thoughtful narration throughout the concert, explaining the origin and connection within the program of many of the pieces. Her violin playing was exquisite. The gut strings provided an earthy tone and her skills as an improvisor shone when in dialogue with the angelic voice of Claire Patti." (ClassikON 2018)
..."the experience of such energy and many unfamiliar tunes was entirely memorable"...(Broadway World, 2019)
"All musicians displayed themselves beautifully on at least two instruments throughout the concert, which enabled their small quartet ensemble to feel like a much larger group...Unique and full of life. The players blend their styles and instruments beautifully." (Nightwrites, 2018)
"A most enchanting concert, strikingly combining Baroque and contemporary musical styles." (Sydney Arts Review, 2018)
"The violins capture the rhythm of a cantering horse in The Horseman’s Port, and the fingerboard work of Lestideau, Dollman and Nagaraja in The Follies Set is exciting with its pace and accuracy"...(Barefoot review, 2019)

Although I grew up playing both classical violin and folk fiddle, it still came as a surprise to me to discover the existence of 18thC Scottish repertoire about 15 years ago requiring my distinct skillset; period performance and Scottish fiddling. The exploration of this music inspired the creation of Evergreen Ensemble in 2013 in Brittany, France.
It's now been more than a decade since the activities of the ensemble have relocated to Victoria, Australia. Each program has brought together a different configuration of players and singers to suit the needs of the music. Regular players, as can been seen below, all have an invested interest in history and musical tradition, and perform with a style that is uniquely theirs. As such, the ensemble's creative output is always colourful and varied, following themes of history, identity, connection to land, and personal narrative.
My curiosity as to how much historical Scottish music was brought to Australia by convicts, colonists, and immigrants has taken me down a winding road of academic research. After completing an NLA fellowship, performance masters, and PhD focused on 18thC and 19thC Scottish-Australian repertoire, this niche subject has become a true passion. Evergreen Ensemble offered the perfect platform with which to further this research through performance, so opening up a fascinating new area of knowledge in the field of historical Australian music.
As a performer, I'm continually searching for new ways to challenge and inspire myself and those around me. This currently involves learning new instruments (viola d'amore, and playing violin while simultaneously accompanying myself with foot-operated organ pedals!), and expanding my creative focus to include other art forms: fine arts, writing, and dance. While I spend a lot of time researching the past, it's of utmost importance to me that the programs I curate, and my own performance output, remains engaging, thought-provoking, and relevant to audiences today.
